Saul Rubinek (Donny Douglas)

Saul Rubinek makes his feature film directorial debut with Jerry & Tom, a fresh and rebellious glance at the hit-man movie genre. Rubinek is well known as a screen actor, having starred in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Oliver Stone's Nixon and Wall Street, Tony Scott's True Romance, Bob Rafelson's Man Trouble, Taylor Hackford's Against All Odds, Brian DePalma's Bonfire of the Vanities, Herbert Ross' Undercover Blues, Gary Marshall's Young Doctors In Love, Jonathan Kaufer's Soup For One, Sweet Liberty, Getting Even With Dad, I Love Trouble. Rubinek was born in a refugee camp in Germany after World War II where his father ran a Yiddish Repertory Theatre company. Later, he began his career as a child actor in theatre and radio in Canada. Rubinek became a member of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival company in Ontario and then became co-founder, actor and director of Theatre Le Hibou, Theatre Passe-Muraille and Toronto Free Theatre. He subsequently started working in the U.S. as an actor at the Public Theatre in New York, dividing his time between theatres in both countries for several years.

Rubinek received his early film and television training as an actor for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and he continues to work as a producer, writer and actor for Canadian independent features. Most recently, he starred as a Chassidic rabbi in Eli Cohen's award-winning dramatic film The Quarrel, which was also co-produced by American Playhouse for PBS. He has won awards and acclaim for his starring roles in the Canadian feature films Ticket to Heaven, By Design, Falling Over Backwards, Obsessed and The Outside Chance of Maximillian Glick.

In addition to his film, stage and television talents, Rubinek is also the author of the nonfiction book So Many Miracles, an account of his parents' survival growing up in Poland during World War II. He wrote and produced an award-winning documentary of the same title for CBC and PBS which chronicles his parents' reunion with the people who saved their lives during the Holocaust.
